Tourism is Florida's number one industry, and this week, I was honored to speak to more than 500 of the state's top industry leaders at Florida Tourism Day. While there is just one official day dedicated to celebrating the industry, we are working daily to protect our great businesses and tourists.
A week ago, my office shut down a travel scam. This is the latest action taken to stop a total of six Florida travel companies accused of deceiving consumers. These companies allegedly charged for items advertised as free and sold vacation packages that could not be used because of burdensome blackout dates and overly restrictive terms and conditions. According to complaints, the travel companies also refused to provide refunds or allow cancelation of purchases, greatly exaggerated savings and made unauthorized charges to consumer credit cards.
People plan and save for years to pay for a family vacation and it is disgraceful that anyone would use deceptive and unfair trade practices to take their money and ruin their plans. My office is fighting diligently on behalf of travelers to protect our state's top industry.
For everyone traveling in Florida, it's important to follow Florida's Move Over Law. January is Move Over Month in Florida, and we are asking all Floridians to review and comply with the law. As a terrifying reminder of why it's important to give law enforcement and first responders room on the roadways to safely do their jobs, please watch this video. More Than a Million Dollars in Consumer Refunds Recouped in 2015  Florida Attorney General's Special Investigations Unit Chief Scott Hunt, Investigation Specialist Tara Berman, Senior Financial Investigator Anna Prince-Palmer, Citizen Services Director Kym Oswald and Consumer Service Analysts Guy Thompson and Kimberly D'Amico A small group of dedicated consumer investigators and servants working in the Attorney General's Office, recouped more than a million dollars for consumers last year. Attorney General Bondi's Citizen Services Office and Consumer Protection Division's Special Investigations Unit work with consumers and businesses to quickly resolved consumer complaints. The Citizen Services Office serves as the point of contact for consumers with a wide range of complaints and inquiries and has two dedicated staffers who assist consumers in obtaining prompt refunds from responsible businesses. The Special Investigation Unit of the Consumer Protection Division has three staff members who review all consumer-related complaints, seek refunds for individual consumers where appropriate and, where patterns of conduct become apparent, provide the groundwork for further investigation by the Consumer Protection Division. Attorney General Pam Bondi introduced a resolution at the Florida Governor and Cabinet meeting recognizing January as National Human Trafficking Awareness Month.
"National Human Trafficking Awareness Month is an opportunity to spread awareness and encourage all Floridians to get involved in the fight against human trafficking," said Attorney General Bondi. "As chair of the Statewide Council on Human Trafficking I am committed to working with law enforcement, prosecutors, legislators, as well as experts in the fields of health, education and social services to bring an end to this abhorrent crime and ensure survivors receive the help they need to heal." On Thursday, Attorney General Bondi joined Governor Rick Scott and fellow Cabinet members, Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater and Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, for a meeting of the Florida Cabinet in Tallahassee.
