| | | | | Guy – My 12-year-old cousin Tamir Rice was tragically shot to death by a Cleveland police officer on November 22, 2014, while playing with an airsoft toy gun in a local park. In almost a year since his death, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty is only now bringing this case to a grand jury to determine if charges will be filed against the officers. This is unbelievable. Our family believes Mr. McGinty needs to be immediately replaced with a special prosecutor, often used in high-profile cases such as this one. His office recently released two "expert" reviews that justified the officers' use of lethal force in taking Tamir's life. These conclusions were made even though neither of the review writers had even interviewed the officers. These actions have left us gravely concerned about Mr. McGinty's bias with Tamir's investigation. That's why I'm asking you to join our family in asking Ohio Governor John Kasich to appoint a special prosecutor to the investigation. | Video evidence shows rookie Police Officer Timothy Loehmann jumping out of his car and shooting Tamir twice at point-blank range within 1.5 seconds of arriving. He shot my little cousin so quickly, it would have been impossible for him to tell Tamir to drop the toy gun, much less for Tamir to respond to him. That should have been all that was needed to charge him.
Tamir was bright and energetic, and had his whole life ahead of him. Our family has fought every day for almost a year for justice, but Mr. McGinty continues to draw this process out. He has repeatedly said he will not step aside despite public calls for him to do so. Until a special prosecutor is appointed to this case, we will not get justice for our Tamir.
