DOT Safety Education News

Students at PS 307 in Corona watched their classmate's winning PSA at an assembly. The lead actresses were recognized and accepted this big check for their school!

We're Walking Here!

Nearly 100 schools citywide competed in this years “We’re Walking Here” competition. The competition launched last October in conjunction with International Walk to School Day. The winning schools submitted public service announcements that encourage walking and active lifestyle choices. Participants download lesson plans and grade- specific curricula developed by DOT’s Safety Education and Outreach division. This competition also builds on the City’s Vision Zero efforts, which aim to educate New Yorkers about our shared responsibility in street safety.

The five winning schools are: P.S. 90/Edna Cohen School, Coney Island (1st); P.S. 1 Tottenville School, Staten Island (2nd) ; and P.S. 307/ Pioneer Academy, Corona(3rd). The Little Red School House and H.S. 721 OTC both received honorable mentions. The first place winner for this year’s competition received $1,000 grant. The second place school received $750 and $500 prize was awarded to the third place school.

Visit nyc.gov/walkingschools to see all five winning PSA’s.

The winning videos are a culmination of two-week walking tallies by the class and the completion of other academic exercises, which help students recognize the benefits of active transportation and give them the tools to share what they learn with others.  All prize money is provided by the Safe Streets Fund, a private- public partnership dedicated to promoting even safer streets, especially among students.

If you’re interested in participating in next year’s, “We’re Walking Here” competition pre-registration is now open. We invite teachers and administrators from public and private schools to visit nyc.gov/walkingschools to register their classes for next year.
