Mother Lode residents and road crews have had two mostly dry daysto
clean up after a Tuesday afternoon storm that dropped 2.18 inches of
rain and hail in just a few hours.
The storm knocked down trees and filled creeks to beyond capacity,
bringing power outages and scattered flooding in Tuolumne and
Calaveras counties.
The cleanup came just ahead of another round of storms that began last
night and will continue off and on through Monday.
The continual wet weather means that foothill drivers will be dodging
potholes for awhile and that those living in homes near creeks will be
on flood alert.
For the last two days, road crews inboth counties have been giving
temporary fixes to potholes. More permanent repair must wait until
warm weather returns.
"When it stops raining we try to fix potholes," said Ed Wyllie,
Sonora's public works director. "We had crews out this week."
Deborah Mullen, Calaveras County Public Works spokeswoman, said
there's not a lot crews can do in thecold wet weather.
"We already started patching pot holes with cutback (a cold asphalt
mixture), but can't make more permanent repairs until hot asphalt
plants open up," Mullen said.
Those plants generally open in April or May.
For Tuolumne County roads, repairs will come when the money does.
Peter Rei, county public works director, said potholes are a symptom
of the bigger problem in the county — failing roads and decreased
funding to repair them.
"There is no simple answer to the pothole issue," he said. "Our
potholes grow faster than rabbits mate."
Rei also had crews out doing what they could to temporarily fix
potholes this week.
Life for area residents affected by flooding on Tuesday is almost back
to normal.
All but two residents have returned to an alcohol and drug recovery
home on Harvard Mine Road in Jamestown after it was flooded. The
residents of We Care Sober Living were displaced Tuesday night, when
Woods Creek overflowed it banks and flooded the lower half of the
two-story house.
Bobby Medina, executive director, said he was going to get some
sandbags in case creek waters rise again.
"But we could use a couple of twin beds, too, so we can get the other
two people back," Medina said.
Despite the six inches of water thatflooded My Glass Works on South
Washington Street in Sonora Tuesday, owner Marlyn Simmons said she's
back to business as usual.
"Don't know how many of these I can put up with," Simmons said,
pointing out that Tuesday was the second time her store has flooded in
two years.
According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, a strong wave
of rain is expected to hit the Mother Lode tonight, with snow levels
around 4,000 to 5,000 feet.
"But a colder, wetter and stronger storm is expected Monday, said
forecaster Elizabeth Morse."Tuolumne and Calaveras counties should not
see the same kinds of problems they experienced last week. But still,
people in low-lying areas should keep a watchful eye onMonday.
"That is the storm that is more likely to cause problems."
Snow levels on Monday are expectedto be around 3,000 to 4,000 feet.
Projected April weather, at least sofar, is looking a lot like March's.
"We just can't seem to get rid of it,this weather pattern," said
Morse."It will stop, this is California after all."
