The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, action-movie
star Steven Seagal, and others have been named in a lawsuit stemming
from a raid last year where Arpaio and his boys brought the
dog-and-pony show to arrest a single cockfighting suspect.

Perry Mason (Raymond Burr) is in Reno, helping Pete Warren (Peter
Breck) finalize his divorce from his wife Myrna. When an incriminating
photo reveals that Myrna (Myrna Fahey) is mixed up in a counterfeit
gambling-chip scam at a local gambling casino, Pete tells a pack of
lies to the authorities to save his soon-to-be "ex" from prosectuion.
Before long, Pete is facing a far more serious charge than
counterfeiting: Myrna has been murdered, and all the evidence points

BAYSIDE – Area animal welfare activists co-sponsored a forum forthe
four candidates for Humboldt County District Attorney Friday, April 16
evening at the Humboldt Area Foundation. It's fair to say that the fur
flew.
"We want to make sure that people know you can't abuse animals in
Humboldt County," said Cynthia Ryan, executive director of the Sequoia
Humane Society. She presented the candidates – Kathleen Bryson, Paul
Hagen, Allison Jackson and Paul Gallegos – with a list of topics to
address. These had to do with the candidates' policies toward animal
abuse, prosecution of suspects and ways to improve enforcement
"There was not a shred of evidence of actual cockfighting," Gallegos
said. "The drugs and blades were circumstantial."
In the end, Christie pleaded guilty to possession of cockfighting
knives. "That's what the process did," Gallegos said. "It was not from
lack of commitment."

Unlike those who spoke before him, former environmental prosecutor
Paul Hagen didn't make any effort to position himselfas an animal
lover. Instead, he started by saying that he isn't one.

smiling together and watching roosters go at it in a cockfighting
venue in the Dominican Republic. The clip was a big hit on You Tube
before it got removed, and before Bud Selig gets a chance to
threatensuspensions, it should be noted that cockfighting is legal in
the Dominican Republic. (It's actually legal in two U.S. states. Can
you guess which ones? The answer is below.) If for anything else just
to get free air time, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
(PETA) has suggested that Martinez and Marichal take an animal
sensitivity training course

In the United States cockfighting is against the law. It is not
illegal to possess, raise, train, advertise, or trade cocks or
accoutrements that could be used for cockfighting. However, actively
participating in a cockfight in any manner is illegal: advertising,
transporting participants or spectators, placing wagers, hostingan
event, etc. It is common for law enforcement to confiscate
propertyassociated with any cockfighting activity.
Animal Welfare Act and the Codeof Federal Regulations
The federal Animal Welfare Act prohibits cockfighting, and in May of
2003, an amendment was added that makes it illegal "to knowingly sell,
buy, transport, deliver, or receive abird in interstate commerce for
purposes of participation in a fighting venture, regardless of the law
in the destination state."
