The benefits of biking HHS HealthBeat (November 22, 2011) The benefits of biking Anywhere and everywhere, only 1 percent of Americans bike. But the 1 percent might convince you to put a helmet on and start pedaling. A study used data from 11 major U.S. cities to measure the benefits that riding your bike had versus driving a car, on road trips less than five miles. Researcher Maggie Grabow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison: âBiking can be really good for your health. It can be really good for your pocket book. Thereâs reduction in air pollution, improved health from reduced air pollution, and reduction in green house gas emissions which contribute to global climate change.â (13 seconds) Fifty percent of all US commuting trips add up to five miles or less. The study in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives was supported by the National Institutes of Health. | You are subscribed to Daily HealthBeat Tip for U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services.
