Hamilton Class Ships Keel out of Mare Island Naval Shipyard

On May 1, 1870, the Point Arena Lighthouse became the first of three
tall coastal towers in California to commence service during the
1870s.
The Annual Report of the Lighthouse Board for 1883 noted that the
station was "located on a projecting point, the outer face of which is
on an almost perpendicular bluff, made peculiarly dangerous by the
liability of sudden caving near the edge of the earth overlying the
sand-rock. One of the labourers fellover this bluff and was drowned. A
picket-fence 1,400 feet long was built around the structures to
prevent further accident."

The Taft leaders declare that tho eight electors they are trying to
keep oft the ticket were designated with
the understanding that they would abide by the decision of the
Republic- an national convention, and that If the state primary
elected them the result would be contrary to the fourteenth
Tmendment to the Federal t"n«t tu- tion which forbids any state to
inter- fere' with the freedom and privileges of citizens of the United
States. Tha Roosevelt people contend that the voters of Kansas should
have the rieht of referendum on the decisionor the national
convention. The l^nsas
law is the only one which would per- mit such a referendum. tl.^ " c e

the probate court has appoint- ed Mrs. Chaffee and Thomas and Wal- ter

the actual ex- istence of the will which is alleged to have made the
two Minneapolis in- stitutions beneficiaries. A rough draft of the
will was made by Mr. Chaffee and sent to Attorney Sullivan of Du-
luth, who found many flaws and draft- ed a new form, which he sent lo
Chaf- fee in Minneapolis, but Chaffee never signed it. He was at work
on the will on his return from Europe but had not actually drafted it
