Every year in Florida, hundreds of lives are lost to heroin overdoses. This deadly drug is flowing into our country from Mexico, and we must do everything we can to stop its distribution and save lives. Today, I stood with the Drug Enforcement Administration and local law enforcement agencies to announce the bust of a major drug ring trafficking heroin and other drugs through multiple Florida counties. Working with our great law enforcement partners, we arrested 15 suspects, and more arrests are expected. The investigation lasted more than a year and besides heroin, investigators also discovered large amounts of cocaine and fentanyl. Users will often mix these drugs in an effort to achieve a greater high, but with that high comes an increased risk of death. I am working diligently with law enforcement to stop drug trafficking in Florida. It remains one of my top priorities, and this bust is a prime example that our efforts are working. My Office of Statewide Prosecution is prosecuting this case, and I am confident justice will be done.  In closing, this past weekend, our country lost one of the greatest legal minds of the last 100 years, United States Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Today, our nation has the opportunity to honor Justice Scalia, who lies in repose at the United States Supreme Court until this evening. Justice Scalia will be greatly missed, and in this time of mourning and reflection, my thoughts and prayers are with his family and our great country.

Assistant Statewide Prosecutor Receives Award
Assistance Statewide Prosecutor Joseph Spataro with Attorney General Pam Bondi's Office of Statewide Prosecution received an award for going above and beyond the call of duty in helping the Drug Enforcement Administration and local law enforcement bust a major drug trafficking ring. The DEA Special Agent in Charge James DiCaprio presented Spataro with the award.
 Florida Woman Arrested Three Times in Six Months
Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the arrest of a Walton County resident for the third time in six months on charges related to Medicaid fraud. While at a court hearing Friday for charges related to previous Medicaid fraud investigations, Megan Sanai, 31, was arrested on new charges.
The charges, grand theft and falsifying records, follow an investigation by Attorney General Bondi's Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. According to MFCU's latest investigation, Sanai stole more than $11,000 from the Social Security Administration and falsified vital statistics records. More.
 Fraudulent Check Writing Scheme Shutdown
Attorney General Pam Bondi's Office of Statewide Prosecution announced the arrest of Maritza Solorzano, a Miami resident, on charges of more than a hundred felony counts related to a fraudulent check scheme.
The Office of Statewide Prosecution assisted the Florida Department of Law Enforcement with the investigation that found that Solorzano used stolen Florida drivers' licenses, fraudulent California drivers' licenses and a Peruvian passport to cash fraudulent checks. Solorzano fraudulently obtained more than $100,000 from 17 different Florida corporations' accounts. According to the investigation, Solorzano used manufactured checks with forged signatures of the various functionaries responsible for disbursing funds for the defrauded corporations. More.

This month, the Central Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce awarded Assistant Attorney General Sarah Shullman a Women of Worth Award, in the young professional category. The Central Palm Beach County Community Foundation Women of Worth Awards honor outstanding women who help advance the educational, cultural and economic interest of the community. Women who receive the award achieved professional excellence, serve their community and strengthen and enrich well-being in Central Palm Beach. Shullman is an Assistant Chief of the Consumer Protection Division in the Attorney General's West Palm Beach office. | Events
